Introduction to Acre-Eye

While the applications of drone technology is nothing new and has been in commercial use for decades, their wide-scale applications continue to expand rapidly as innovators keep coming up with new ways to add value and make our lives easier. As drones become more prevalent in our society, much of this growth is attributed to not only declining costs of technology but also to the adjustments of government regulations on drone use. The agricultural industry has seen some major innovations in recent years due to the implementation of drone technology. The added benefits include scouting out new field locations, providing quick and easy ways to remotely check small sections of crops, and surveying entire fields. Drones are aiding farmers several of the developing challenges in the industry. The use of drones can help to increase productivity, permitting improved agricultural adaptation to the effects of climate change; they can also assist in the reduction of pollution.

Implementation of Drones

The number of farmers adopting drones in their farms is growing rapidly. Drones offer a cost-efficient way to monitor their crops. Using drones for farm management is far more complex than taking aerial photos and videos. Extracting useful information from the data gathered by drones involves a complex process that not all farmers may be willing to do. Below is a list of all the benefits and drawbacks of using drones for agriculture.

  • Better data quality: Multispectral drone surveys have ushered in a new era of unequaled data quality and accuracy.
  • Flexible analysis: Multiple multispectral surveys can be conducted in a single survey area to see changes over time of some useful parameters.
  • Ease of deployment:Before drones, farmers who wanted to conduct aerial surveys of their farms had to use manned aircraft. Drones have reduced this need and increased simplicity.
  • Crop spraying: Spraying using drones has also proven to be faster than other traditional methods.

Reduction in operational costs: Although using drones may involve a high start-up cost, it is still the more economical solution in the long run. Doing aerial surveys using manned aircraft will certainly be more expensive, as it will require more expensive equipment and more manpower.

Software Architecture

Several software components have been added to the project so far. That includes the frontend, backend as well as the raspberry pi modules.
